Global lithium battery industry development status

(1) Global lithium battery shipments show an accelerated growth trend

Thanks to the rapid growth of new energy vehicles and energy storage markets, according to data from the Ivey Economic Research Institute, global lithium battery shipments grew from 72.7GWh (gigawatt-hour) in 2014 to 562.4GWh in 2021. In particular, in 2022, with the doubling of global new energy vehicle production and sales, the lithium battery industry will usher in explosive growth.

(2) The growth rate of power and energy storage batteries doubled, and the increase ratio of power batteries was the highest

From the perspective of structure, the global automotive power battery shipments in 2021 were 371GWh, accounting for 66% of lithium battery shipments, an increase of 134.7%. Energy storage battery shipments were 66.3GWh, accounting for 12% of lithium battery shipments, an increase of 132.6%. Shipments of consumer batteries (including 3C batteries and small power batteries) were 125.1GWh, accounting for 22% of lithium battery shipments, an increase of 16.1% year-on-year, and demand was saturated. In recent years, the global new energy vehicle market has developed rapidly, and the demand for lithium-ion batteries has grown rapidly, and lithium-ion batteries have become the largest engine for the growth of the global lithium-ion battery market.

(3) The concentration of lithium battery industry continues to increase

Internationally, China, Japan and South Korea are the world's major producers of lithium-ion batteries, with the total output of the three countries accounting for more than 90%. Global lithium battery, especially power battery industry concentration has reached a high level. Mainstream battery manufacturing enterprises have obvious advantages in terms of stable production process, battery product consistency and stability, large production capacity and large-scale effect. According to Gaogong lithium battery statistics, by the end of 2021, the total loading volume of the world's top ten power battery companies accounted for about 92.8%. In the future, as industrial giants continue to make capital investments, the phenomenon of head concentration will be more obvious.
